The crisis in Latin America went beyond the walls of prisons. The streets of Argentina, El Salvador and Venezuela were taken by thousands of citizens who protest for their fundamental rights. Contrary to what would be expected to be promoted in SOCHUM, China proposed to strengthen judicial systems and end social protest outright. CNN spoke with their delegate.

CNN: The alliances are already made. For some it might be curious that, with all the current controversy of Venezuela in the United Nations, a veto would establish an alliance with them. What are your reasons?

China delegate: Venezuela has always been a country of interest to China. Within the South American region they are our greatest allies, not only for the socialist ideas they have and represent, but also for their historical context and struggles. With all the current tension between Venezuela, China and the United States, it is very important for us and Venezuela to remain united and stay prevented about a any possible attack or threat from the US.

CNN: However, the issue in this case are the social protests. Internationally you are known to be extremely strong and strict with them. What is Venezuela’s plan to face them, with China by their side? What is the proposal that unites both of you on this?

C.D.: We believe that most of the protests in Venezuela are unfounded and unjustified. We are convinced that the Venezuelan government continues working for the welfare of its population and taking measures to fight inequalities. That is why we are working with them and we will continue to do so. Nicolás Maduro was elected by democratic means and represents the will of the people. We consider that they are acting the best way possible by forcefully facing the protests, although we recommend them to be even stronger.

CNN: Proposing them to “be even stronger” with social protests means using forms of repression, intensifying jail as punishment or fighting violence with violence?

C.D.: In our country the consumption or production of drugs, are non-negotiable nor are the social protests. Those are political issues in which we are absolutely critical with our national and international security. That is why our judicial and penitential system is that good. We are clear about the interests of the government and the people, we want the same things and we go to the same place. From our own experience, we believe that Venezuela must strengthen its defense. If they arrest and impose measures on the protesters, the government of Nicolás Maduro will give a clear message to his people.

CNN: In previous conversations with CNN, the government of Nicolás Maduro blamed the United States and Colombia for orchestrating a terrorist attack against the Venezuelan head of state. What’s China’s position on that?

C.D.: As I said before, we are very concerned about what is happening between the U.S., Venezuela and us. We will always try to be close to Venezuela. We completely trust the representatives of Nicolás Maduros’ government. We know that any accusation they make has enough evidence to be supported. If at any time there is a possibility of direct intervention by the United States to Venezuela, that is the moment when China starts playing a very important role. China supports the Venezuelan government, even against a possible American intervention.

CNN: If that is your position, it means that relations between China and the US are not at their best.

C.D.: Well, it is not a secret for anyone that since our President took office a few years ago, we have become much more open to the world and its different positions. For our country and for our President it is truly important to solve the problems that may exist between the United States and us, but they have cut off any possibility of dialogue.
